The halls of Richmond Senior High School, Ninth Grade Academy, and Richmond Early College were buzzing with school spirit during homecoming week! Each day had a fun theme for students to participate in. Monday was Class Color Day, where high school students showed their class pride; Tuesday, students dressed as senior citizens for Senior Citizen Day.
On Wednesday, students dressed up for Career Day, envisioning their future professions. Thursday took it back with Throwback Thursday and decade-themed outfits from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. The week culminated with Green and Gold Day on Friday as students showed their Richmond Raider pride.
The energy and excitement carried over to Friday night as the Raiders took on the Southern Lee Cavaliers under the lights at Raider Stadium. The Raiders were determined to win on Homecoming night. Behind a rowdy student section and community support, the Raiders came away with their first victory of the season!
It was a great week of school spirit and creating memories. Homecoming brings out the best in our students, staff, and community. Go Raiders!
Superintendent Dr. Ferrell held the first meeting of the year with the Student Advisory Council. The council consists of student representatives who will meet with Dr. Ferrell quarterly to discuss issues impacting students.
For the first meeting, Dr. Ferrell met with students from the Early College High School. The meeting received glowing feedback from the student council members. Students appreciated the opportunity to directly connect with district leadership and share ideas to improve the student experience.
To include perspectives from all across the district, Dr. Ferrell plans to rotate the meetings between different schools. This will allow him to connect with and hear ideas from diverse students at each of our schools.
Dr. Ferrell was enthusiastic about the discussions, saying "Our students have fantastic insights. Hearing their perspectives will help inform the work we do as a district to best support our students."
We are excited to see the great ideas that come from the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council as the meetings rotate amongst our schools this year. What an impactful way to give students a voice in important conversations.
Richmond Senior High is thrilled to announce Zane Searcy and Ella Scott as this year's Mr. and Miss School Spirit!
Zane is a student-athlete who serves as President of the RSHS Student Senate and student body. His academic merits earned him the title of Chief Junior Marshal. He is a member of Fellowship of Christian Students, Beta Club, Science Club, National Honors Society, Varsity Baseball team, and an active member of his church praise team. Zane plans to attend a four-year university and major in the biomedical field.
Ella is a student-athlete who serves as Beta Club President, HOSA President, and Senate Secretary. She is a member of National Honors Society and Varsity Tennis. Her favorite high school memory is attending the Beta Club convention during her sophomore year. After graduation, Ella plans to major in biology and become an anesthesiologist.
Both Zane and Ella exhibit outstanding Raider pride and embody what it means to be Mr. and Miss School Spirit. We're proud of these exemplary student leaders!
Hamlet Middle School recently welcomed award-winning author Aminia Luqman-Dawson for a special visit with 6th grade students. Ms. Luqman-Dawson is the author of several books, including the novel "Freewater."
During her visit, Ms. Luqman-Dawson led students in interactive discussions about the writing process and shared insights from her experiences as an author.
The students gained inspiration hearing directly from a successful writer about following your passions. The school is thankful to Ms. Luqman-Dawson for generously giving her time to motivate the next generation of readers and writers in Richmond County!
Richmond Senior High School hosted an engaging career fair that allowed students to explore a diverse range of local career paths and industries. Over 50 businesses and organizations set up informational booths that enabled students to network and connect with potential future employers right in their own community.
The career fair provided invaluable exposure for students to discover local career opportunities spanning healthcare, business, construction trades, hospitality, public service, and more. Students were able to have meaningful conversations with professionals to learn what skills and education are needed for various careers of interest.
Richmond County Schools is proud to announce that Stephanie Upton has been named the district's EC Teacher of Excellence for 2023. Ms. Upton is a phenomenal educator who has dedicated the past 10 years to teaching special education students in our district. Her compassion and commitment to her students is unmatched.
Congratulations to Stephanie Upton on being named EC Teacher of Excellence. We are lucky to have such a talented and dedicated teacher shaping the lives of our students. Ms. Upton exemplifies the best qualities of an educator.
Students from Richmond Senior High School and Richmond Early College High School came together before class around their school's flagpoles for See You at the Pole. This annual event provides a time for students across the country to meet in prayer for their schools, communities, families and nation.
The local See You at the Pole events were organized by the Fellowship of Christian Students clubs at each high school. Many students braved the early morning chill to join their peers in prayer and worship.
Thank you to the students who organized these meaningful events and all who came out to participate. What a great demonstration of student initiative and spiritual leadership.

Earlier this month, central office staff from Richmond County Schools came together to give back for the annual United Way Day of Caring. This exciting event provides opportunities for local organizations to volunteer for community service projects.
Our staff volunteered at local food banks, Habitat for Humanity builds, and nonprofits across the county as part of Day of Caring service projects.
We appreciate all the hard work our staff put in to supporting Day of Caring in Richmond County. Their spirit of service sets a positive example for our students and schools.
Elementary students across Richmond County Schools recently joined in celebrating World School Milk Day! This global campaign, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, highlights the important nutritional benefits that milk provides for children.
Our enthusiastic kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders learned about how milk helps build strong bones and contains vitamin D, protein, calcium and other vital nutrients. Some classrooms read stories featuring cows and dairy farms. Others made crafts or sang songs about milk.
Recently, Richmond Senior High School installed the OpenGate weapon detection system to improve security and streamline the entry process. This innovative technology uses advanced sensors to detect potential weapons concealed on a person's body without requiring bag searches prior to walking through the sensors.
The OpenGate system has helped eliminate long lines to get into the school, allowing students to move quickly and directly to class upon arrival. At the same time, the enhanced detection capabilities have increased the level of safety and security on campus.
We are thrilled to utilize innovative technology like OpenGate to continue improving security protocols and the overall student experience at Richmond Senior High School. We look forward to implementing this system at other schools throughout the district as well.
